monday monday…

Filed under: right outside my door — justpete @ 10:49 am

There’s snow outside! AGAIN! AUGH! There is a purpose even in that, however, so let us rejoice. I’m going to rejoice by pretending I’m walking through a marshmallow wonderland. On to other things…

Last night we had our “Celebration Sunday” at my church, after the completion of the 40 Days of Purpose campaign. I had the somewhat trying task of being in charge of the bouncy-room (I don’t know what they’re properly called, but you know… those inflatable rooms that kids bounce in). It was fun, of course, because there’s nothing I like better than being with the kids. Thankfully, despite the fact that kids were maxed out on mega-sugar rushes, and bouncing around in big rubber rooms, and then outside playing with sticks coated in gunpowder, followed by a fireworks show – there were no injuries. Praise God!

I even had the distinct pleasure to serve as Al Bernard’s assistant for his amazing “thumb-tied” illusion. Al Bernard is a professional magician in my fellowship who not only does the classics, but also uses illusions to teach Christian values (www.albernard.com). It’s always a great show to watch, and this time I actually got to be in it! I was slightly disappointed that I wasn’t asked to put on one of those cool sparkly dresses, though.

Speaking of Christian magicians, I should also point out that I know more than one now! Nate Nygren of Astonishment.org even has some amazing tricks viewable online, as well as a few theological articles. Check both of these guys out!

freedom!

Filed under: right outside my door — justpete @ 3:05 pm

Finally made it out of my driveway around 2:00pm! FREEDOM! I took a little trip to get some milk, and here’s what I saw…
My driveway was pretty good after the plow got through with it.

Alyssa was so ashamed of her father (for not shoveling) that she dug herself a hole to hide in

There are mountains of snow all over the place!

There’s railroad tracks under there somewhere

I wanted to go window shopping, but I couldn’t see any windows!

SNOWED IN!

See that large white cottonball on this sattelite image? That’s me under there. You can click on the image to see a close up Infra-Red sattelite image (noting approximately where I am in that mess). It’s not quite as bad as they were origionally predicting – only 90km/h winds instead of 100 – but I’m not going anywhere today. We’ve closed our offices for the day, and everyone’s staying safe. I’m very thankful my boss flew out of town earlier this week instead of today. Marsha’s boss called first thing this morning to tell her not to come in, and of course, there’s no school.

Pray that folks try to stay off the roads today. Hope everyone else is enjoying better weather.

cold snap!

Filed under: right outside my door — justpete @ 10:46 am

Brrr! Woke up to a very chilly Sunday morning, and it looks like it’s going to continue all this week. I bundled up in my new winter coat and gloves (thank you, honey!) and headed out to brush the car off on Sunday morning. As I turned to the door, the panicked deck-officer cried out, “Your Tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker!” Sneering, I pulled my hood over my head and snorted, “Then I’ll see you at church!”

Oh, hang on – that’s not what happened. Sorry about that, sometimes I get confused. Anyway, it’s been hovering around -20° (that’s -4° for you silly Fahrenheit people). While many might consider such cold unlivable, I grew up in Smith Falls, Ontario. I am, therefore, familiar with -40° winter days (that’s -40° for you silly Fahrenheit people). I’ve learned to appreciate the moderating effect of the Atlantic ocean.

If any of you from, say, the Phoenix area would like some free snow, you’re welcome to come up and take it with you. We’ll keep it cold for you. But in case you’re wondering how we pass the time up here when it’s this cold: Check out our national winter sport…

it’s beginning to look a lot like moving to florida

Filed under: right outside my door — justpete @ 7:59 am

I live in Canada, I know that – so I shouldn’t have been shocked to see all the snow outside this morning. But… man… I DON’T LIKE SNOW! Oh well, God has a purpose in all things. School wasn’t cancelled, which suprised me a little, and Alyssa enjoyed bundling up in ski-pants, boots, et al.

I’m over-tired, so tonight, I’m going to bed EARLY! So, if you are someone local to me, and you even think about picking up the phone and calling me tonight, you should know that I have many Nerf® guns here, and I’m not afraid to use them.
